Margaretta Days Festival
The Margaretta Days Festival is held annually commemorating the Battle of the Margaretta as the first Naval Battle of the American Revolution in which the Machias Patriots successfully resisted British aggression by capturing the British vessel the HMS Margaretta. The Festival also celebrates the Battle of Machias (the Rim) in August 1777 when the British returned to destroy the town. The Patriots and their Native American allies once again turned the British away. The Festival demonstrates life as it was in the colonial era, using reenactment and demonstrations. The Festival is free admission to the public thanks to our generous volunteers, advertisers and donors.
